Senator urges Tinubu to declare state of emergency in Taraba

The Senator representing Taraba South senatorial district, David Jimkuta, has called on President Bola Tinubu to declare a state of emergency on security in the Takum and Ussa local government councils of the state.

The call, if adhered to, he believes would address the reckless killings that have been going on in the local government councils.

Jimkuta, who doubles as the Senate Committee Chairman on Social Warfare and Poverty Alleviation, made the call on Tuesday in Wukari council while fielding questions from journalists.

He said declaring a state of emergency in the areas will enable farmers return to their farmlands and begin rebuilding their lives in the face of the unprecedented threat to the region’s food security.

The senator who also announced that over 700 persons have been killed in the two local councils within three months, said the killings, if not addressed, would escalate to other parts of the state.

Expressing sadness over the menace, he said banditry activities in the areas have left over 50 villages in Ussa and Takum in disarray.

Calling on security agencies to take decisive action, he urged collaborative efforts with locals to track down the bandits and kidnappers that have been terrorising the areas.

He said “We know where they are; let’s flush them out. These areas are major food producers, and with people displaced and unable to access their villages, we are facing a looming food crisis.”
