The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, of the Taraba State University, TSU, has identified lack of proper funding as a major factor impacting negatively on the smooth running of the university.
The leadership of the union made this known on Thursday at a press briefing in Jalingo, the state capital.
Led by its chairman, Mbave Joshua Garba, the union also identified the non-implementation of Law No.4 of the Taraba State House of Assembly and urged the state government to do the needful to prevent the institution from collapsing.
Others are 2.5 percent of contracts awarded by the state and local government, 2 percent as state education levy from charges on guests in hotels in the state, among others.
The union also expressed sadness at the alleged non-implementation of the Memorandum of Action, MoA signed on the 18th of March 2021 by the state government, the Taraba State University management and the ASUU-TSU branch.
“The union members are owed Earned Academic Allowance, EAA, dating back to 2015, and the government lacks clarity regarding staff pension and gratuity.”
Raising the alarm on the alleged delay and irregular payment of salaries which they said often leads to fractional payment of salaries, the union confessed that its members are dying in silence, saying, “we are owed six full months and seven months fractional salaries”.
“It is worrisome to maintain that our members are going through excruciating economic realities in the wake of subsidy removal and inflationary forces,” the union lamented.
